Get ready for fall clean-up

Yes, Nashville, we offer handyman services, too

We love fall, and we love our friends at Zillow. The first part should be obvious: cooler weather, crunchy piles of leaves, jack-o-lanterns and pumpkin spice everything! As for Zillow, although it’s mostly known as a real estate site, they also feature lots of helpful articles on organizing and home maintenance.

They posted one recently that recommended five chores to get your home ready for fall, and we can definitely help you out with four of those: painting, window washing, patio gear storage and sealing your garage floor. We certainly wouldn’t mind helping you hang shelves and bring in furniture to create a mud room — their fifth chore — but organizing and design aren’t really our areas of expertise! So, why would a Nashville lawn care company be able to help out with those decidedly non-lawn related chores?

paint supplies

Because we actually provide much more than landscaping services. Our yard work and landscaping duties obviously slow down during the cooler months, but we like to keep our crew busy. That’s why we can take care of things like painting, both interior rooms and outdoor structures like decks and porches; window washing, which will keep you off the ladder and safely curled up on the couch with Netflix and popcorn; and other stuff you’d just as soon not dirty your hands with.

Of course, sometimes it really is a matter of needing that extra pair of hands (or three or four) to do the work for you — perhaps you live alone, or you and your spouse are no longer able to safely climb up and down ladders. We’re more than happy to provide you with free estimates for any job on your fall to-do list. Here are a few more we’d be glad to help with:

1.       Gutter cleaning. You know the leaves are already building up when falling walnuts bounce right off and into the hands of those greedy little ground squirrels.

2.       Equipment storage. When you’re ready to hang up your gardening gloves for the year, it’s best to clean and store pots, gardening tools and hoses so they’ll be in top condition next spring.

3.        Power washing. If you happen to have a hackberry tree, and you’re unfortunate enough to have those infernal wooly hackberry aphids (those harmless looking white fluffy flying bugs), then you’ve got sticky “honeydew” on everything from your car to your sidewalk. When the aphids are gone, we’ll come in and power-wash your sidewalk, porch steps and anything else the aphids hit —before it turns into sooty black mold!

4.       Bulb planting. We have the tools and the know-how to properly space and plant all your spring bulbs, plus we’ll do one final weeding for the year to get your beds looking nice again.

5.       Mulching. Some plants like a layer of mulch to keep their roots warm over the winter. Let us spread it for you.

There are plenty more chores we can take care of, so don't hesitate to ask. We've been providing lawn, maintenance and handyman services in Nashville and the surrounding counties for 15 years. You can always count on us for competitive rates and professional care. Please email us or call us at 615-977-7671. Happy fall!

5 ways to entertain guests in your backyard for less than $40

Nashville lawn care pros will keep your lawn party-ready

One man's heat wave is another man's opportunity for fun. So, yes, August tends to be the hottest month in Nashville, but that doesn't mean you should just hide inside napping next to the air conditioner.

Why not make the most of it by turning your backyard into a fun zone? And with the money you'll save compared to a water park or an amusement park, you can easily afford a lawn care professional to do the dirty work (but more on that later).

backyardfun

Those games you played when you were a kid are just as much fun now, and they're a great way to spend time with the whole family. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Badminton. Is it as challenging as tennis? On first glance, you might be tempted to say no. But then you remember they actually have Olympic badminton teams. So, basically, it's as challenging as you want it to be. Either way, you can get a nice backyard set — not Olympic regulation style, mind you — for $28 at Walmart.

Corn hole. You may have called it bean bag toss or bag toss Or nothing at all, depending on where you grew up. But throwing a little fabric bag full of beans into a hole cut in a wooden board is, weirdly, just plain fun. It's also very simple to setup, and a fun game to play for family members of all ages. You can certainly make your own, or you can buy one here and here.

Volleyball. The good news here is that if you've already bought a badminton set, all you need now is a volleyball. That's essentially two games for the price of one. Well younger kids may not be able to play and the older set will not want to, you can get the little ones involved but keeping score in fetching balls that get bounced out of bounds.

Horseshoes. A couple of steel posts, four cast-off shoes and an open playing field are all you need. Yes, you can buy sets at Walmart and other big-box stores like Academy Sports & Outdoors, but you can also get old horseshoes pretty cheaply on eBay, Etsy and probably by calling some riding stables in your area. A great game for both the skilled and the lucky, you can set this one up with or without a sandpit. Can be played by two people or two teams, and unlike a lot of these games, you can also practice by yourself.

Lounging. I was going to say "drinking" here, but let's face it: This is a fine activity with or without alcohol. All you need are a couple of lounge chairs, a table and a really good recipe for lemonade, spiked or not. Buy a pretty pitcher from World Market and grab a patio umbrella if you don't have a shady spot to set up in, or consider building a pergola.

Lemonade

1 3/4 cups sugar

8 cups water

1 1/2 cups lemon juice

1. In a small saucepan, combine sugar and 1 cup water. Bring to boil and stir to dissolve sugar. Allow to cool to room temperature, then cover and refrigerate until chilled.

2. Remove seeds from lemon juice, but leave pulp, if desired. Stir together in pitcher with chilled syrup and remaining 7 cups water.

Get your lawn on a schedule

Antonio & Delsy Lawn Care can get your yard out of the weeds

Happy Fourth of July, everyone! This particular holiday is always a sure sign summer is well underway, with backyard cookouts, beer on the patio and fireworks everywhere. It’s also a sure sign your grass is growing like a weed — and, incidentally, so are your weeds!

Antonio & Delsy Lawn Care is the professional lawn service in the Nashville area that can help take care of all that, putting your yard maintenance on a regular schedule that can be adjusted as needed. Some people like to keep the grass trimmed close to the ground every week; others prefer to let it grow a little longer and have us mow every 10 days.

This time of year, we can have all sorts of weather at play, from drought to frequent thunderstorms. And as the weather changes, so will your cutting schedule. We’ll keep an eye on it for you and let you know when you should consider either more or less frequent lawn services. And as for those weeds… if your idea of fun is getting out on a muggy morning and kneeling on the damp grass, slapping at mosquitoes while you wrestle the weeds away from your hostas and trim the volunteers around your crepe myrtle, by all means, have at it. But you can probably think of, oh, about a thousand more things you’d rather do.

Nashville, lawn-mowing season is upon us

So hire Antonio & Delsy Lawn Care to do the dirty work!

Flats of pansies are popping up everywhere.

Flats of pansies are popping up everywhere.

Spring has sprung upon us, and even though we knew it would, it still feels like a lovely surprise. Sunshine, pallets of pansies everywhere — and, oh yes, your dormant lawn is stretching and yawning and waking up.

What does spring mean at your house? Weeding flower beds? Clearing out winter brush? Planting new container gardens? All of these chores are perfect for Antonio & Delsy Lawn Care. Our team of experts can handle everything from regular grass cutting to landscaping and home repairs. We’ve been somewhat dormant this winter ourselves, and we’re ready to get back into the swing of things.

It’s important to realize, of course, if you’re considering any major new plantings this year to wait until after the danger of frost has passed. In Middle Tennessee, that can mean anywhere from April 15 to April 30, depending on where you live. So, unless you want to pay close attention to the forecast and be prepared to run outside with sheets to cover your tender new shrubs and trees, it’s probably best to wait a bit.

Meanwhile, there are lots of other spring chores you can tackle — or that we can tackle for you.

1.       Take inventory. Do you want a vegetable garden this year? An herb patch for your kitchen? The ground is soft enough to mark off and start digging (always call 811 first to make sure you don’t hit any important utility lines, of course!). We can do raised beds, traditional beds with borders or container gardens. Make your wish-list now.

2.       Amend the soil. No need to call up Robert's Rules of Order or bang your gavel. Soil amendments simply add nutrients and fertilizers to your soil, replacing anything lost in the last growing season, and can help make your yard more hospitable for growing things.

3.       Trim rose bushes and trees. Not everything likes to be pruned in early spring — step away from those hydrangeas! — but trees, rose bushes and even boxwoods will generally thrive with some trimming up this time of year.

4.       Repair fences and stepping stones. Freezing, thawing, raining — all of these things take a toll on the ground and can upset your previously level paving stones. You may need to add soil or gravel beneath the stones to re-stabilize them. As for fences, they can fall into disrepair any time of year, but it’s a good time to check them before all your vegetation grows back.

5.       Rake up leaves and debris. You’re bound to have plenty of last year’s leaves (and enough loose twigs and branches to build a log cabin after all those winter storms) covering the ground. Take advantage of the good weather before the final frost to sweep out the old stuff and get ready for new growth.

Still snowed in, Nashville?

Antonio & Delsy Lawn Care can help

All those beautiful limbs can cause a lot of damage falling on houses and cars.

All those beautiful limbs can cause a lot of damage falling on houses and cars.

The Nashville area was transformed into a winter wonderland this week, but it wasn’t exactly Disney’s “Frozen.” Although the ice-covered branches were beautiful, many of them cracked and fell. Sidewalks became skating rinks, and roads were impassable. In some neighborhoods, they still are.

While we’re all shivering in this arctic air, keep in mind you don’t have to go it alone when it comes to shoveling your sidewalk, cleaning away all those broken limbs or even removing branches you think might still be a hazard. The team at Antonio & Delsy Lawn Care does great winter work and can handle all your odd jobs and repair problems.

We’ve even got a solid 4-wheel drive pick-up truck that can make its way through anything Mother Nature throws at us this winter! And she’s definitely packing it in late in the game. WKRN reported this week that 46 kids ended up in the emergency room during the first two days of the ice storm due to sledding accidents. Tragically, two people were killed in a traffic accident. Businesses shut down, buses were on snow routes and many people lost power. If you haven’t slipped and fallen yourself, you probably know someone who has.

A layer of snow on top of ice seems safer but is actually still very slippery.

A layer of snow on top of ice seems safer but is actually still very slippery.

When the thaw comes — and it will — you may start discovering problems you didn’t realize you had. That’s where our team can help. We offer free estimates and can do all kinds of interior and exterior repairs and clean-up, including hauling away debris.

With another round of snow predicted for tomorrow as of this writing, the mayor’s office warned Nashville residents to brace for the weather and offered tips on keeping warm safely:

  •  Keep anything that could catch fire at least 3 feet away from any heat source
  • Never use an oven to heat a home
  •  Turn off space heaters when leaving a room or going to bed
  • Have your chimneys cleaned and inspected yearly
  • Burn only dry, seasoned wood in fireplaces and wood stoves; Never use flammable liquid to start a fire
  • Make sure you have working smoke alarms; test them out every month
  • Have warm blankets and flashlights ready in the event of a power outage

We’ll leave it to you to protect yourselves and your pets during this icy spell, but just know you can call on us if you need help with anything. Our prices are very reasonable, our team is always professional and friendly, and you can always count on us to show up. We’ve been taking care of lawns and odd jobs in Nashville and surrounding areas for 15 years. Please give us a call at 615-977-7671 or email us at antoniolawncare@gmail.com for a free estimate. We look forward to hearing from you. Stay warm!
